Too many people think that screensavers are rubbish, but I think they are awesome. My workplace (Enemy of Average does not pay the bills!) has the standard, boring Windows screensaver. That damn Windows logo pops around the screen and bores me to tears. So, I set myself a mission to find the best screensavers on the web. And here they are…..
POLARCLOCK

Polar Clock is a very cool screensaver. Each ring moves around your desktop to complete a circle. The outside ring is counting the seconds and each ring moves into the final ring, which is the month, completing a full calendar. Easily one of my favorite screensavers due to its simple design and uber sexiness.
Available for: WINDOWS, MAC & iPhone
HOLDING PATTERN

Just like looking out of the window of a plane. Every time your screensaver kicks in, you will get a new view from your seat. The plane glides smoothly across the sky as you take in the beautiful scenery.
Available for: MAC & WINDOWS
FLYING TOASTERS

Many, many moons ago a company called Berkeley Systems released a software package which was just screensavers called After Dark (you can still get it from Amazon). There was a lot of them, but one of the most popular of these, and the icon screensaver for the company was called Flying Toasters. Now, you can go retro and download it for free.
Available for: WINDOWS & MAC
HAND WRITTEN CLOCK

This one is cool because the numbers are handwritten, with a hand coming in each time to write the new number. This includes seconds!
Available for: WINDOWS
DROPCLOCK

Dropclock is dead sexy. Every minute of real time is numerically expressed with heavy Helvetica dropping into water in super slow-motion. The Dropclock screensaver is FREE to try and if you do love it, then you can purchase it for just $15.00
Available for: WINDOWS & MAC
FLIPCLOCK

Have you noticed that I have a bit of a thing for clocks in this post? Flip Clock is my current screensaver as I type this. Based on the old fashioned flip clocks, it reads your computers time and displays it as your screensaver.
Available for: MAC & WINDOWS
FAARCLOCK

Some might say that FaarClock is a little dull and boring, and they may be right. But I like FaarClock purely for its simplicity. Plus, when you walk past your computer you see the time!
Available for: WINDOWS
TWINGLY

Twingly visualizes the global blog activity. Forget RSS readers where you see only what you’re interested in. With Twingly screensaver you get a 24/7 stream of all (viewer discretion advised) blog activity, straight to your screen.
Available for: WINDOWS
BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

Feared the world over is Microsoft’s Blue Screen of Death. And now it’s available as a screensaver. When the Blue Screen of Death screensaver kicks in, it randomly creates BSOD error messages. Funnily, this download is from the Microsoft website!
Available for: WINDOWS (why not MAC?)
FIREFLIES

This one was too pretty too leave out. Fireflies fly around your screen. You can set how quick, how many, what colors and more. This is an awesome screensaver.
Available for: WINDOWS, MAC & LINUX
ELECTRIC SHEEP

Hypnotic. This is the best way to describe the Electric Sheep screensaver. Thousands of computers are connected together and when they ’sleep’, the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as “sheep”. The result is a collective “android dream”, paying homage to Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. When you see “sheep” that you like, you vote for it using your keyboard. Popular sheep live longer and reproduce according to a genetic algorithm with mutation and cross-over!
Available for: WINDOWS, MAC & LINUX
FIRE

Set your monitor ablaze with the Fire Screensaver. As this screensaver comes on, it sets your monitor on fire with crackling fire sounds.
Available for: WINDOWS
UNIQLOCK

Nothing sexier than a bunch of Japanese girls dancing around on your screen, is there? In between dances, a clock pops up to show you the time before the screensaver brings up another group of dancing Japanese girls. When you visit the link, you will need to click the menu to the left of screen to get to access the downloads page.
Available for: WINDOWS, MAC & MOBILE PHONE (Mobile phone only for Japanese residents)
DIGG

All of the products from Digg Labs are now available as screensavers. My favorite is Stack, but you can also download BigSpy, Swarm and Arc.
Available for: WINDOWS & MAC
SYSTEM 47

This one is for all the nerds who love Star Trek. Personally, I’m a Star Wars fan, but I do like this screensaver. It turns your desktop into the library system from Star Trek. It will run scans of the universe and the Enterprise.
Available for: WINDOWS & MAC
SOUNDSTREAM

This is cool. Soundstream uses ambient noise picked up on your Mac’s microphone and creates beautiful imagery based on the noises it picks up. This could be someone walking past, someone coughing, the kettle boiling, the phone ringing or a dog barking. The possibilities are endless and you know that no screensaver will ever look the same, its always going to be unique.
